アンチエイジング

Anti-aging is the English source form of アンチエイジング, with the British spelling anti-ageing also found in dictionaries such as Shogakukan Progressive English-Japanese Dictionary. In English, anti- is a prefix from Greek anti, meaning against, and aging names the process of growing older. Japanese dictionaries also write アンチエージング, and Kotobank's Digital Daijisen defines it as prevention or treatment of symptoms linked to age. In Japan, the term spread through medicine, cosmetics, supplements, and health magazines in the late 20th century, then became common in 2000s beauty advertising. The Japanese Society of Anti-Aging Medicine, founded in 2001, uses the Japanese translation 抗加齢医学, which shows the medical route. Store copy also places アンチエイジング beside エイジングケア, 美白, しわ対策, サプリ, and 美容医療. Modern Japanese often uses アンチエイジング as a marketing label for skin care, diet, exercise, and procedures. English anti-aging can also refer to scientific research on biological aging, but Japanese ads often mean measures for a younger appearance. Because cosmetic claims are regulated under the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act, companies may choose エイジングケア for milder product copy. Example: アンチエイジング化粧品 means anti-aging cosmetics, not a cure for aging.
